Sueca Paella Festival
Local chefs and plucky outsiders sweat over wide pans of yellow rice bubbling above open fires at the paella contest on the final day of the annual Sueca Paella Festival. A horse parade and fireworks round off the festivities.
Surrounded by paddy fields in Spain's paella heartland, Sueca holds its own when it comes to cooking rice. The wholesome aroma will send you straight into one of the nearby restaurants for your own plate. Taste plump morsels of rabbit, the integral Valencian component, alongside chicken, fat white snails in their shells, three types of local bean, occasionally mussels and always a good dose of saffron, garlic and olive oil.
The festival is part of celebrations in honour of the patron saint Virgen de Sales and lasts for about two weeks.
