New Year's Eve Pine Cone Drop
Times Square in New York may have its crystal ball, but Flagtaff, Arizona is proud of its annual New Year's Eve tradition - the dropping of a giant pine cone. At six feet tall, this is no ordinary pine cone.
The crowd gathers outside the Weatherford Hotel to watch the drop, first at 10pm (to accommodate families) and then again at midnight to usher in the New Year proper. The event has been a firm favourite since its inception in 1999.
