Turtle Days - Lighting Of The Tiki Torches

when:May 2010 (annual)
where:South Padre Island
cost:Free
time:Procession starts at 5.30pm; sunset ceremony at 7.45pm

Each year sea turtles come to South Padre Island in Texas to nest and they are welcomed with gusto by local residents. The event includes hula dancing, music and live performances.

The King and Queen Sargassum kick things off by leading a procession of kayakers around the entire Texan island, lighting the tiki torches placed at the water's edge by local residents. At Palm Street Pier they are greeted by drummers, hula dancers, and a special performance by the Bongodogs.

Any keen kayakers should meet at Ted's Landing at 5.30pm to join in the procession, while spectators can watch from wherever they like before heading to Palm Street Pier for the festivities.
