This Valentine's Day, snuggle up with your sweetheart at the National Theatre's free outdoor screening of Noël Coward's 1945 classic, A Brief Encounter. Tea, coffee, Bath buns and Banbury cakes are provided, but you have to bring your own blankets.
Film buffs can attend a symposium, A Brief Introduction, held prior to the screening at the Lyttelton Theatre. Guest speakers include Celia Johnson's daughter, Lucy Fleming, recalling one of her mother's best-loved performances, and Noël Coward biographer Philip Hoare.
Directed by David Lean and starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, Brief Encounter is a 1945 film about the trappings of British suburban life. It centres on a housewife who meets the love of her life while in a convenient marriage.
