The raunchy week-long street party known as the Festival del Caribe takes place in Santiago on Cuba's east coast. Celebrate Caribbean culture with all-night dancing, fuelled by a steady supply of Cuban Havana Club rum.
Catch traditional Cuban bands and music and sound systems playing international dance music. See the processions of decorated vehicles and curiously attired dancers and get stuck into all kinds of foodstuffs sold from stalls - pork products are particularly popular. Last but not least, take your own cup for beer and rum. Children ride in little carts pulled by goats and in miniature trains.
Santiago de Cuba, "the first city of the revolution", is a town with a history of popular insurgency that long predates Castro's revolution. Like all good revolutionaries, the Santiaguerros know how to throw a good party.
