Colombian National Beauty Contest
The lovely town of Cartagena on Colombian's Caribbean coast hosts the country's annual National Beauty Contest, or Reinado Nacional de Belleza de Colombia.
The beauty queens from each of Colombia's regions become famous throughout the country as tabloids and news programmes run daily stories about them during the run-up to the contest.
On the day itself, the reinas (queens) parade through the huge crowds on carnival-like floats. The competition also coincides with Cartagena's independence celebrations, which adds to the party atmosphere.
When Señorita Colombia is eventually chosen, she becomes a national star and ambassador for a country that is renowned for its beautiful women.
