Yerseke Mussel Festival
The fishing village of Yerseke stages its annual mussel harvest every summer. Visitors can chomp through bucketloads of free mussels, watch the fleet go through their paces in a spectacular show, or even join them on rides among the islands.
Around 40,000 people converge on the market and harbour for rich salty pickings. Look out for the decorated cutters sailing on the Oosterschelde river. Market stalls sport everything from clothes to shoes, flowers and vegetables, while a variety of live music and a general carnival atmosphere keep visitors entertained - but you might never want to eat a mussel again...
