Set up in 1975 by a group of rowing revivalists, today the Vogalonga boat race is one of Venice's biggest events. It takes place around Ascension Day, coinciding with the old ceremony of the Doge's symbolic marriage to the sea.

By 9am well over 1000 craft have slipped into the broad expanse of St Mark's basin and bob gently in the early-morning sunshine. As the cannon shot rings out over the water, more than 5000 eager rowers begin their 30-kilometre journey across the lagoon to the island of Burano and back.

The "long row" was conceived as a protest against the motor boat traffic that endangered the city's waterside buildings through wash and pollution. Over the years it has become a carnival procession, sporting challenge and an affirmation of love for the city and its maritime culture rolled into one.

On this day, oarsmen in traditional craft rule the canals. Dragon boats full of Dutch students cruise alongside impeccably-dressed Italians in matching stripey shirts (who row standing up in the traditional style), kayaks, eights, fours and fishermen's sandoli. Imaginative fancy dress, rowing club livery, admirals' caps and even onboard bagpipers all draw applause from the jovial spectators who line the canals and urge the boats on.

Those who take the event seriously can complete the course in around two hours, but those who are there for the camaraderie and the sights can take five. Most of Venice's motor boats remain tethered for the day, and the waterways echo to the sound of rowers' chants, whistles, drum beats and cheers. It's a great time to visit the city, whether you're holding a nice glass of red wine or a paddle...
