Gretta Scacchi returns to the West End as Hester Collyer in Terence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea at the Vaudeville Theatre. Directed by Edward Hall, Scachhi is joined by Simon Williams, Dugald Bruce Lockhart and Tim McMullan.

Following Lady Bracknall as played by Penelope Keith (who has played Hester herself in the West End) at the Vaudeville, The Deep Blue Sea is also a Theatre Royal Bath production, already with fantastic reviews from its Bath run and on tour.

Regarded as one of Terence Rattigan's finest plays, The Deep Blue Sea follows Hester Collyer in her dilemma as a seemingly perfect establishment girl - a clergyman's daughter, married to a judge - who has a young lover, ex-Battle of Britain pilot, Freddie Page. The problem is that Page is lacking both the financial and emotional requirements for Collyer to leave her husband, which leaves her between the proverbial devil and the deep blue sea.

Gretta Scacchi is perhaps best known for her film roles, which include Heat and Dust, White Mischief and Emma. Edward Hall is artistic director of the all-male Propeller Company, whose Shakespeare productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Rose Rage at the Comedy Theatre and both Twelfth Night and Taming of the Shrew at the Old Vic have been applauded in the West End.

The rest of the cast comprises Simon Williams as Hester's husband Sir William Collyer, Dugald Bruce Lockhart as Freddie Page and Tim McMullan as neighbour Mr Miller, as well as Jacqueline Tong, Rebecca O'Mara, Geoff Breton and Jack Tarlton.

Built twice by the same architect, C J Phipps, first in 1870 and then to a new design in 1891, the Vaudeville Theatre also underwent further redevelopment in 1929. Appropriately, given its title, it specialised in musical theatre and comedy, from Salad Days to Willy Russell's Shirley Valentine and, from 2002, the noisy exuberance of Stomp.
Since 2005 the Vaudeville Theatre has been part of Nimax Theatres.
