Anguilla achieved its independence from the joint statehood of St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla on 30 May 1967. A boat race around the island, to and from Road Bay, commemorates this date every year and flaunts the island's passion for the sport.
Crowds build up around Road Bay to watch the five to seven-hour race after the Independence Day parade and accompanying speeches in Ronald Webster Park. Numerous parties celebrate Anguilla Day across the island and carry on into the night.
