Street Ballet (Balé de Rua) comes to the London from the vibrant pavements of Brazil. Having won a Herald Angel at last year's Edinburgh Fringe, the 16-strong company arrives at the Barbican Theatre.
Like Venezuela's sistema programme getting kids involved in classical music, Cia de Dança Balé de Rua was created in 1992 after Fernando Narduchi, Marco Antônio Garcia and José Marciel Silva had already been collaborating in the working class districts of central Brazil's Uberlândia for four years. A sensation when they first played Europe at the Biennale de la Dance in Lyon in 2002, this is the company's first visit to London.
With its exhilarating blend of African-inspired capoeira, hip-hop, break dancing, samba and Afro-Brazilian percussion, Balé de Rua conjures up the cultural melting pot of Brazil. Inspired by the urban dance movement of the favelas, Brazil's history comes to vibrant life, with its mix of indigenous and African heritages, in Marco Antônio Garcia's invigorating and breathless choreography. Back in Uberlândia, the company provides dance training to young people from all over the city. With funding from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, it opened its own cultural centre in 2007.
