TD Bank 5-Boro Bike Tour
The TD Bank 5-Boro Bike Tour is the largest mass-cycling event in the USA. A river of 30,000 cyclists flows from Battery Park between the skyscrapers of Manhattan at the start of a 68km (42-mile) odyssey through New York City.
Participants in this staggering display of pedal power get a car-free sightseeing tour while organisers provide rest areas, bike repair, medical help and food en route. It's an amazing spectacle and a timely reminder of society's dependence on oil.
The cyclists travel through New York's five boroughs on traffic-free streets, avenues and bridges, passing through Manhattan, Harlem, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn. After crossing the finish line, there's a tour-ending festival at Fort Wadsworth in Gateway National Recreation Area on Staten Island, with live music, food and exhibitions.
If you'd like to watch, good vantage points are the overpass by the FDR Drive at 79th Street, Manhattan (9am-11.45am), Greenpoint Avenue between McGuinness and Franklin, Brooklyn (10.30am-1pm), and Fulton Landing in Brooklyn (11am-2pm).
