Mermaid Parade
Hundreds of mermaids, King Neptunes, mer-babies and mer-animals descend upon the Coney Island boardwalk to celebrate the beginning of summer. View the parade on Surf Avenue between W 10th Street and W 15th Street, or on the Riegelmann Boardwalk.
Scores of people, from little girls to grown men, hit the streets in sequinned bikinis, saran-wrap tails and pots and pots of body paint. Don't forget your camera, as it's unlikely that you'll see anything like it again.
The after-party, which begins as the parade winds down, offers live music, sideshow acts and burlesque dancers.
