Locally known as festino, meaning little festival, the Santa Rosalia Festival has been celebrating Palermo's patron saint for nearly 400 years! There are massive parades and processions in the city centre, concluding with fireworks and music on the last night.

Santa Rosalia herself is said to be the saint who saved the town from a terrible plague in 1624. After spending most of her life in penance on the Monte Pellegrino and dying there in 1166, her body was forgotten for almost five centuries, only to be rediscovered on the eve of a terrible epidemic, which stopped as soon as the saint was recognised and the festival was instituted.
