Barringer's Meteor Crater

when:Daily
where:The Desert

Barringer's Meteorite Crater is one of the best-known craters in the world, and at 570 feet deep and 1 mile wide, so it should be. In 1968, the US government listed it as a Natural Landmark.

What happens when a nickel-iron meteorite, around 150 feet across and 100,000 tonnes in weight, crashes into the surface of the earth at about 40,000 miles an hour? Answer: a very big hole. So big, in fact, that scientists reckon the force of the collision would have been equivalent to a 20 million tonne TNT explosion. Over 50,000 years later, the dust has now settled leaving the Crater.
