Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata
Hot, dusty Valledupar fills with the sound of paseo, merengue, puya and son music every April. Alongside the superbly popular música vallenata, there are also three main folklore contests at the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata and competition is stiff.
The Conjunto Típico de Música Vallenata contest seeks out the best accordionist of the year. Vallenato has its own rhythm and sound, characterised by the accordion and a percussion instrument called a guacharaca. The music has developed over the past 50 years, becoming a favourite of the laid-back people of the Caribbean coast, as well as the whole of Colombia.
Each year musicians from all over the country descend on the town to do battle for the crown of El Rey Vallenato, (The Vallenato King). There are various categories - professional, amateur and one dedicated to children - and performances take place in various venues, including Plaza Alfonso Lopez.
Valledupar is also home to an excellent archaeological museum in the Escuela de Bellas Artes and is only a few hours' travel away from the beautiful Caribbean coast of Colombia, where the incredible national park - Parque Tayrona - has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
