Edmonton International Fringe Festival
This year's Edmonton Fringe Festival is another uncensored celebration of theatre from all over the globe - accessible, inexpensive and fun. Performances take place at a variety of venues in the Old Strathcona theatre district of town.
A mix of local and touring artists present everything from classical repertoire to contemporary experimental work. There's also a liberal dose of dance, music, clowning and improvisation for good measure. Artists are encouraged to produce whatever work they want. Projects that cannot be accommodated in regular indoor theatres can take part as BYOV's (Bring Your Own Venues). Be prepared for some unlikely theatre spaces.
Performances take place from noon to midnight on outdoor stages, while more than 100 international busking groups claim the streets as their own. Expect poets, multimedia artists, clowns and jugglers, presenting classics and new works ranging from light-hearted comedy sketches to challenging performance pieces.
Around half a million visitors and 1000 performers descend on Edmonton for what has become the largest arts event in western Canada. As the action takes place in the heart of the city's historic and funky Old Strathcona neighbourhood, audience members can drop into some of the rather cool clubs and bars in the area for some post-show socialising.
