The UK celebrates National Poetry Day in October every year with numerous events all around the country. Alongside readings and writing, these include the announcement of several important poetry awards. The theme for 2009 is Heroes and Heroines.

In order to fuel the UK's enthusiasm for verse and to provide a platform for poets and poetry of all kinds, William Sieghart of Forward Publishing, together with The Poetry Society, founded National Poetry Day in 1994.
