Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show

Gooseberry

when:Aug 2010 (annual)
where:St Hedda's Schoolroom
time:2pm

Upholding the 19th-century tradition of finding the heaviest gooseberry has always been of utmost importance at Egton Bridge in North Yorkshire. Some 200 years after its origin, competition entrants at St Hedda's Schoolroom are as enthusiastic as ever.

Gardeners enter their biggest gooseberries into one of four classes: red gooseberries (Lord Derby); yellow ones (Woodpecker); greens (Fascination) and white ones. The prizes are household goods - who knows, maybe even a liquidiser. The heaviest gooseberry is determined by an apothecary scale, measured in drams and grains. Past record winners have weighed in at 33 drams - that's the size of a golf ball.
