Harvey Nichols
In 2000, the first Harvey Nichols store outside the UK opened within the Al Faisaliah retail mall in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It stocks a broad range of international designer clothes and accessories, perfume and cosmetics, and has its own restaurant and food hall.
The curvaceous, modern building, designed by Norman Foster and Partners in collaboration with Buro Happold, features a glazed front facade. Designed to look good in the dark - due to the Saudi penchant for night-time shopping - lights flash to highlight the custom-made blinds at night, which is somewhat distracting for passing traffic.
The store has been adapted to suit local customs - separate, flexible dining areas have been designed for men and women in the same restaurant, achieved simply but effectively with the use of electronically-operated curtains.
