when:18 - 20 Jun 2010 (annual)
where:Oklahoma City

The largest Native American gathering in the country, the Red Earth Festival brings 100 tribes from all over North America to Oklahoma City. The city becomes a rainbow of headdresses and costumes with music, dancing and parties throughout the weekend.

Established in 1987, Red Earth Festival has grown to attract almost 2000 Native American artists and dancers. Crowds of up to 100,000 watch the mammoth parade, when dancers and tribal dignitaries march through the streets of downtown Oklahoma City.

After the parade, the biggest highlight is a whole series of dance competitions in a bewildering array of categories (Ladies' Northern Traditional, Teen Girls' Jingle etc). More than 200 artists and artisans display their wares and art competitions take place in a dozen categories, from painting under glass to hand-thrown pottery.
