| Val d'Isère, with its fascinating landscape of glaciers, domes, rounded crests, gently sloping valleys and deep canyons, is located close to the Italian border and is easily reached from Geneva and Lyon. | |
| Olympic champion Jean-Claude Killy grew up here, loved this Savoyard village (which he called "the world's most beautiful winter sports playground") and even gave his name to an entire skiing area - the Espace Killy - comprising 100 lifts that service Val d'Isère and neighbouring Tignes. Once on site, two funiculars and 100 ski lifts allow easy access to more than 10,000 hectares, stretching over 300km of marked runs. Although this classic French resort is famed for its difficult slopes, it also offers green pistes that suit young children and novice skiers. Today, Val d'Isère is a vast area, criss-crossed by ski runs and the train rouge (red train); a free shuttle bus that serves all the hamlets, from La Daille - where World Cup downhill event Critérium de la Première Neige is held at the thrilling OK (or Oreiller Killy) - to Le Fornet, a 1930-metre high paradise, offering a wide range of off-piste possibilities for experienced skiers, including red and black slopes and the celebrated face olympique. In total, the resort offers access to 135 marked slopes. In addition to its excellent skiing facilities, the resort offers a good range of high-quality accommodation and lively bars and restaurants, where local Savoyard specialities or gastronomic French classics are on offer. Over the winter season a whole host of events are organised, from skiing to snowboarding, ice-skating and seasonal festivities. The resort has plenty to offer in summer too, with countless activities including rafting, horse-riding, archery, hiking in the Vanoise National Park, golf, tennis, outdoor gymnastics, adventure paths, climbing walls, motorbike tracks, a circus school for kids and more. From 29 June to 29 August, the Solaise Express chairlift and the Olympique cable car are the only two ways of getting up the mountains. Summer skiing depends on the amount of snow on the glacier. | |
