when:15 - 16 May 2010 (annual)
where:Venice

Venice's Feast of the Sensa is the continuation of a 1000-year-old tradition. The head of the city (the Doge) annually renews the marriage between Venice and the sea by throwing a ring into the waters of the lagoon.

Historically the Doge travelled in the bucintoro, the magnificent state vessel, during the Feast of the Sensa and was accompanied by hundreds or thousands of gaily decorated boats on his journey. The day was a joyous occasion to affirm the civic and spiritual identity of the Venetian city-state.

Today, the solemn ceremony of the Sensa is still performed, with a huge entourage of decorated boats, although more for entertainment purposes than for actual civic symbolism.
