La Faglia

La Faglia, Oratino. Photo by Antonello

when:Dec 2010 (annual)
where:Oratino

Made entirely from sugar cane, La Faglia is an enormous torch, measuring 12 metres high and two metres wide. On Christmas Eve, it is set alight in the town square of Oratino, creating a magical spectacle.

The construction of this enormous flammable torch-tower begins in autumn after the harvest and is undertaken by the entire community. On Christmas Eve a procession carries the huge artefact to the town centre, accompanied by ramshackle musicians, who improvise freely on random instruments. Once in place, La Faglia rivals the bell tower in height and, when lit, burns with an eerie flame.

The sacred torch is blessed by the local priest in the few moments before it is raised as a glowing beacon against the night sky, celebrating the birth of Jesus.
