where:San Fruttuoso
cost:Free
time:Dusk

In San Fruttuoso bay, 17 metres underwater, stands the enormous bronze statue of the Christ of the Abyss, protector of divers. On the last Saturday of July divers take a sacred crown down and deposit it on the figure's head.

As night falls, lights go out and giant projectors light up the reefs outside the village. A solemn procession of boats sets forth, while the priest blesses the sea and divers swim down to the statue to deposit the crown.

The statue was the brainchild of an Italian artist who lost a friend in a diving accident. He realised that there was no holy figure in Christianity to protect those who journeyed under the sea. The Christ of the Abyss was deposited on the seabed in August 1954.
