Dad Vail Regatta
The Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate rowing event in America, takes place along the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.
The 2000-metre course starts from the east bank of the river. University teams participate in several classes that are determined by weight and size. Heats begin early on Friday, with semi-final and final races contested on Saturday. The presence of thousands of student athletes and spectators makes for a festival-like atmosphere in the beautifully landscaped park areas along the river.
The regatta traces its history to 1934, when University of Pennsylvania rowing coach Rusty Callow established the trophy and named it for his friend Harry Emerson "Dad" Vail, the famed Wisconsin coach.
There are numerous viewing positions - which are free of charge - and food stalls set up along the bank. Kelly Drive is closed to traffic during the race, but the racing area is easily accessible on foot from the city centre.
