Ringfest

Up close and personal at the Musikfest am Ring, Cologne

when:Aug 2010 (annual)
where:Cologne
cost:Free
time:11am-10pm

Cologne closes three kilometres of its ring road each August to host the largest music festival in the world - Ringfest. Two and a half million spectators enjoy 2000 artists on ten stages over three days, all for free!

While journeyman pop and rock acts make up the bulk of the festival programme, sprinklings of jazz, oldies and world music round off the programme, along with fashion shows, capoeira demonstrations and other entertainment. The programme features both international names and national groups.

Besides the festival itself, Cologne has a lot to offer visitors, from its enormous cathedral and its unequalled collection of Romanesque churches, to its famous taverns, where wisecracking waiters sling rack after rack of thin 20 cl glasses full of Kölsch, the city's distinctive and refreshing top-fermented beer.
