when:Daily
where:Parc Loisirs de la Citadelle
cost:Free
time:Zoo: Summer 10am-5.30pm; Winter 10am-4.30pm

This huge open space of the Parc Loisirs de la Citadelle is very popular with the people of Lille, featuring over 50 hectares of well-tended walks, a zoo and lofty views of the Citadelle.

The park was originally named the Bois de Boulogne, allegedly because the locals wanted a park to rival that of the same name in Paris. Nowadays it is a popular family destination with games, a playground and a zoo containing some 400 exotic creatures.

Visitors can also catch a glimpse of the awesome Citadelle, built by Sébastien Leprestre, Marquis of Vauban at the order of Louis XIV, who had just conquered the town. Originally it was a small town surrounded by five bastions in a star shape. Nowadays it is home to a military centre but it's still possible to walk around its formidable fortifications.
