Formally known as the Olympic Park Summer Festival, Impark09 brings the Oktoberfest spirit to Munich's Olympic Park. Carnival rides, from Ferris wheels to rollercoasters, keep the kids happy. Adults prefer that well-known Bavarian speciality, the beer garden.
One of the highlights is the "historical boatman's tournament", in which boatmen on the Olympic Lake in the park aim to capsize one another's boats using their pikes. This competition, which resembles the log-rolling event at North American lumberjack competitions, doubtless has its origins on the Isar and other fast-flowing Bavarian streams, where burly boatmen used to guide cargos on their way to the Danube.
