Whitsun Carnival

when:May 2010 (annual)
where:Copenhagen
cost:Free
time:12pm-12am (with children's activities 11am-5pm)

The streets of Copenhagen are filled with Latin sounds and colourful costumes for the annual Whitsun Carnival. Now in its second decade, the carnival attracts more than 100,000 people, a big change from its days as a simple street party.

On Saturday the main procession starts on Strøget and continues up Øster Allé, ending at the Sambadrome, one of four theme tents. On Sunday evening, the event ends with a huge nocturnal parade. During the day the four theme tents present a wide array of Brazilian, salsa, reggae, blues and tribute bands, with local DJs showing off their talent too. Various associations stage displays of capoeira, African dance theatre, rueda de casino (salsa) and more.

Kids aren't left out - there are a number of children's activities on the menu, including competitions. If world music isn't your bag, the ballroom tent is probably your best bet.
