where:Manhattan
time:7.25am (time limit of 9.5 hours to complete the swim)

Each summer, as New York gets hot and sticky, the spectacular annual Manhattan Island Marathon Swim offers contestants a way to cool down. The swim is a 28.5-mile marathon through the waters of the Hudson River.

Anyone with any knowledge of the Hudson, whether first-hand or from the movies, will be suspicious to say the least about the contents of a river that flows past Manhattan, the Bronx and Jersey City. But it is not just the river that is cause for concern. In 2001 the race was stopped twice due to lightning, thunder and torrential rain.

Despite the difficulties the event remains surprisingly popular. The course starts and finishes at South Cove in Battery Park City on the Hudson River, just south of the North Cove Yacht Harbour. Swimmers set out south around the tip of Manhattan, then counter-clockwise around Manhattan Island via the East River.
