Feast of the Black Nazarene

Feast of the Black Nazarene, Manila. © Laz'andre F Cawagas

when:Jan 2011 (annual)
where:Manila

The Feast of the Black Nazarene is an intense devotional procession through Manila's Quiapo district. The focus is a rare statue of the suffering Christ, with a cross on his shoulders and a blood-streaked face.

The statue is made from a particular dark hardwood and arrived on a galleon ship from Mexico in the 18th century. On the feast day, the Quiapo district fills with male devotees who crowd round the figure as it moves along in the huge procession.

The chance to actually carry the statue is the province of the lucky few, who are thought to imbibe the Holiness of the Black Nazarene.
