Ambaji celebrates every time there is a full moon, but the full moon of Bhadrapad is one of the most important festival days of the year - Bhadra Purnima. Local farmers flock to the town's temple in their thousands, along with members of the general public.
A large fair marks the occasion during the day, while the evening sees performances of music and dance. The devout attend readings of the Saptashati, the 700 verses in praise of the Goddess Ambaji, and visit the temple for an auspicious view of her.
The Ambaji shrine lies in the foothills of the Aravalli mountain range. It is the principal shrine of the Goddess Ambaji in Gujarat and its origins date back to 746 AD.
