Archaeological Museum

The Bull-Leaping fresco from the Palace of Knossos, 17th-15th centuries BC

when:Daily
where:Archaeological Museum
time:Mon 12pm-5pm; Tue-Sun 8.30am-3pm

This important museum in Heraklion houses archaeological finds from all over Crete, and is second in importance only to the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Pride of place goes to the treasures of the earliest European civilization, the Minoan, which was responsible for the great palace at Knossos.

The exhibition contains objects mainly from central and east Crete and covers a staggering 5500 years of Cretan history. The exhibits are ordered to reflect the chronological development of the Minoan civilisation and to reflect both the history of the excavations and the major discoveries made on Crete at the beginning of the century (palaces at Knossos, Phaistos, Malia etc).

Highlights include a bull-leaping fresco, libation vessels carved from rock crystal inlaid with jasper and mother of pearl, gold rings and faience figurines.
