San Cyriacus and Santa Paula Day

when:Jun 2010 (annual)
where:Iglesia de los Santos Mártires
cost:Free

San Cyriacus and San Paula, Malaga's patron saints, were canonised in the year 305 AD during the early history of the Christian Church. Their saints' day is marked by a religious service held at the Iglesia de los Santos Mártires.

After having regained Malaga from the Arabs in 1487, the Catholic Kings wrote to the Pope to inform him of the considerable advances of the Christian faith in the south of Spain. The Pope thanked them for their efforts and proposed that the patron saints of the new city be Saint Cyriacus and Saint Paula.

In 1548, Isabel and Fernanado, Los Reyes Católicos, built a temple in Malaga in honour of these two martyrs. In 1582 the Church declared the 18 June, the anniversary of the patron saints, to be a holiday.

In contrast to other local religious holidays such as the pilgrimage of Our Lady of Victory (La Romería de Nuestra Señora de la Victoria), this is a low-key celebration marked by a simple religious service.
