Several hundred species of butterfly are housed at Aruba Butterfly Farm near Oranjestad, set amid colourful blooms and palms. Spend a morning walking through gardens with accomplished lepidoperists on a tour that covers biology, conservation and trivia.

This lovely butterfly farm is one of a few in the Caribbean, which attract high numbers of visitors eager to have a break from the sun, sea, sand and shopping recipe of your standard Caribbean holiday. You can learn all about the butterfly's evolution, from caterpillar to chrysalis to winged wonder, and even, if you're lucky, catch a new butterfly being "born" at dawn.

The obligatory gift shop sells butterflies on a pin in nice glass boxes. Pretty, if a little sad.
