Halong Bay

when:Daily
where:Halong Bay

One of Vietnam's most naturally beautiful places, Halong Bay is known for its spectacular scenery, with hundreds of islands rising out of the water. The area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Once a favourite hideout for pirates, Halong Bay is a mystical place. The tall stone islands rise out of the turquoise water with shapes reminiscent of dragons, roosters and old men fishing, and have inspired many legends. At the centre of these islands are caves and grottoes including Thien Cung (Heavenly Residence Grotto), Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto), Sung Sot (Surprise Grotto) and Tam Cung (Three Palace Grotto).

The area was home to the ancient port of Van Don, and also encompasses Poem Mountain (Bai Tho Mountain - where engravings of poems about emperors and other famous figures can be found) and Bach Dang River (the site of two fierce naval battles). This, along with the area's archaeological significance and its biological diversity (salt water-flooded forests, coral reefs and tropical forests with a huge variety of flora and fauna) led to its recognition as a natural heritage site.

As well as exploring the islands, there's plenty of room for some kayaking or other watersports or just relaxing on the shore - there is a resort at Bai Chay along the coast of Halong Bay, surrounded by gently sloping hills, pine trees, hotels, restaurants and long stretches of sand.
