Described by many as the emerald jewel of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake (Lake of the Restored Sword) is a beautiful place steeped in legend. It has a pagoda/temple set in parkland on an island at the north end.
The legend of the lake dates back to the 15th century, when Le Loi drove out foreign invaders with the help of a precious sword borrowed from King of the Sea, proclaiming himself king. Soon after he took a gentle trip on Luc They (Green Water) Lake and a wave rose in front of him with the Golden Tortoise Genie on top. He told the king that he should return the sword, which flew out of its scabbard and into the genie's mouth as it dived back below the surface.
The lake took on its new name from this moment, and its green colour and the golden light that shines on it have inspired poets and writers. The Golden Tortoise Genie has never been seen, but there are a few small tortoises around the lake and a huge stuffed turtle by the pagoda.
