The Soviet Hammer & Sickle that finally resisted Hitler's invasion of Russia at Stalingrad

when:Daily; not Mon
where:Stalingrad Battle Panorama Museum
time:Tue-Sun 10am-6pm (until 5pm in winter)

One of the Second World War's fiercest battle sites, Stalingrad, at the heart of Russia's steppe, was the beleaguered city where the Soviet army withstood Hitler's final onslaught in the east. Tracing its history back to 1589, when it was founded as Tsaritsyn, in 1925 the city was re-named after the new Soviet leader, and for 200 days over 1942 and 1943 the world watched as one million soldiers fought at what was the turning point of the war. This museum, in now-renamed Volgograd, tells the battle's story around the museum's centrepiece, a massive 16 x 120 metre panorama: The Defeat of Fascists Armies at Stalingrad.
