Valencia Guide

Medieval history collides with the avant-garde in Valencia. Spain's third-largest city wears its cultural heritage on its sleeve, from the ultra-modern curves of the City of Arts and Sciences to the cobbled streets of the historic centre.

See

Explore the futuristic playground of Santiago Calatrava's City of Arts and Sciences (CAC). Prepare to be seduced by the 15th-century merchants' hangout of The Silk Exchange and the modernist hubbub of Central Market. The Barrio del Carmen is one of the oldest parts of the city, and still a window into a true Valencian way of life, amid cafés and tapas bars.

Spend

Buy Valencian ceramics – a huge industry that produces everything from tableware to figurines to jewellery. Famous ceramics brand Lladró is based in the nearby town of Tavernes Blanques, but you can also find their outlets in the main city. Calle de las Cestas ('Street of the Baskets') is the centre for wickerwork, including baskets and delicate fans, as well as gold jewellery. Dress like a Valencian in bold, colourful designs by local darling Francis Montesinos, much loved by the Spanish A list.

Get Out

Escape the crowds with a picnic in Valencia's expansive green paradise, the Jardín del Turia, or practise your sailing at the marina. Feel the sand between your toes at the busy urban Malvarrosa Beach, just a few minutes from central Valencia.

Culture

The Palau de les Arts in the City of Arts and Sciences hosts an ever-changing programme of theatre, opera and musicals. The Palau de la Música in the Turia Gardens is a viable alternative for dance and musical performances. See contemporary paintings and installations at the Valencia Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) or ceramics at the González Martí Ceramics Museum at the Marqués de Dos Aguas Palace.

Eat & Drink

The Valencians love their paella. Dine on the rice and seafood concoction in traditional style at one of the classic restaurants on Las Arenas beachfront. In summer, party in the cava bars lining the beaches of Malvarrosa. Snack on tapas in the university district around the Plaza Xuquer or Barrio del Carmen in the city centre.

New Perspective

Eye-opening glimpses of a space-age world abound at the City of Arts and Sciences, the best of which is from the eye-shaped Hemisfèric - gaze into the reflecting pool for a dramatic effect.
